Soils

Clay-limestone

The calcareous resurgences breaking through beside the estuary originate from ancient deposits and are the result of erosion. They form the deep substructure of the majority of the vineyards at Château Rauzan-Ségla. Clay ranging in colour from blueish grey to dark red has formed here and helps the vine stock to retain freshness.

Merlot

Merlot

36% of the vineyard
Round, cuneiform leaf
Long and well-aerated clusters
Red fruits, strawberry, cherry and plum

The Merlot vines are grown in these cool, mineral-rich soils. They draw their strength from their soils which enable them to develop an intense, fruity character. They are powerful and distinctive with lovely volume.
